Here’s something I thought I’d never write; The Toronto Maple Leafs are pissed at Snoop Dogg and are thinking about taking him to court. According to sportingnews.com:
Snoop Dogg, whose legal name is Calvin Broadus, filed a trademark application for his company with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Nov. 17. After seeing the logo Snoop used, the NHL’s Maple Leafs decided there were enough similarities with their own logo to object.
On June 8, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) filed an opposition to Snoop Dogg’s logo in order to get more time to consider whether to formally challenge the logo. Christopher Sprigman, an intellectual properties professor at the New York University School of Law, told TSN that MLSE could argue the logos will cause confusion in the marketplace.
If the Maple Leafs actually do sue snoop d-o-double g, then I’m going to laugh my ass off. The whole case is silly because there is no way in hell that people are going to confuse these two vastly different brands.
First of all, they’re different colors. And they’re not even close colors that could get mixed up, like yellow and green or something. It’s blue and green. Even a colorblind person could tell the difference between the two.
And let’s just look at the designs here. The Maple Leafs are one of the OG hockey teams. They were there at the beginning of the NHL and have a pretty damn recognizable logo. Snoops meanwhile, looks like a leaf from the future. That’s a robot leaf. Robo-leaf. People, no matter how high they are, aren’t going to think the ML logo is Snoops.
Then finally, the most obvious thing of all; the freaking names on them. I can’t say this for Snoops logo but the ML always have their name on the design. You will have to go out of your way and search online to see it without the clubs name on it. And I’m going to guess that ‘Leafs by Snoop’ will do the same thing, thus leaving no room for doubt about which company is which.
So, if MLSE wants to sue the rapper, they can go ahead but this is going to be him during that whole case:
