Wow. I mean, wow. I’m blown away. Just watch this trailer:
And by ‘blown away’ I mean that I’m blown away by mediocracy. This looks like the same game as the past couple years. I mean sure, there’ll be a few tweaks here and there, but the overall product is going to be a very minor improvement over previous entries. On the official NHL 17 features page and the trailer itself, they seem to be trying to get everyone excited about the addition of new celebrations, which is cool and all but is it worth the $60 asking price? Absolutely goddamn not. That’s worth about $15 during a sale and that’s the problem. People keep buying these yearly games that have barely any improvements, so the creators have no incentive to actually make a big improvement.
If you want a full fledged successor to something, you need to let the developers know and the best way to get their attention is to stop spending money on their games. Especially when you’re dealing with a company like EA, who loves their ‘top’ cheddar (See what I did there?). If you hit them in their wallets then you’ll have their attention and we can demand they bring back the outdoor games and actually make significant upgrades to their previous entries in the series.
Look at what happened to Assassins Creed. The first few games came out years apart and they were all great (especially the second one). Then they went to a yearly format because the series got really popular and after that, each game got a little more stale and glitchy, excluding Black Flag of course. It got so bad that the publisher, Ubisoft, had to publicly say they were taking a year off and was going to take a look at the franchise. That happened because the last two games of the series didn’t sell too well and people got tired of the same thing year-in and year-out.
That’s what we need to do with these sports games. Show them we want more than just some roster updates and a couple of minor improvements. We want some fully fleshed out game modes. We want an actual story mode like NBA and now FIFA has. We want the goalies to stop letting in terrible shots! We want-
…Wait…You can dab in it? You’re telling me I could dab on Mike with Brent Burns after I score on him? Oh. Well… this changes things. Ok ya so everything I’ve said in this post? Forget all that. Go buy this game the day it comes out! Dab on ’em boy!
